the system and interface

We have developed the original system and interface for this installation. The requirement of the system is similar to that of an on-line video conference system, but we wanted to achieve the stable, good quality of image and sound (VGA quality image / stereo sound).

The internet connection on the Rotterdam side was ADSL (1200k up /512k down). The connectivity in Bandung was at that time very poor, so we decided to take a dedicated line close to one of the main backbones(512k/512k).

The system for the permanent version is been developed by the Amsterdam based IT company Driebit . For the running period they have been responsible for the on-line maintenance both in Rotterdam and Bandung.

In spite of the complication of installing the digital equipment in the outdoor public space, the installation has been 90%-95% up running throughout the whole year of 2004.

common for both Rotterdam and Bandung:

Rotterdam Hole design

The Rotterdam side construction is integrated with the renovation of the square, and a real (physical) hole is being made in the ground. The interface is designed in such a way that the audience can stand on it and look down into it, so that they can feel and imagine 'the other side' easier.

The assignment of the construction is given by the City of Rotterdam.
Bandung Hole design

The Bandung side interface is quite identical to the one in Rotterdam. It is being designed and constructed by multiple parties. It's smaller in size, and more or less moveable.

Because of the half transparent material, it gives the light itself when it's dark.
