Preview Hole in the Earth by Maki Ueda, Saturday 9 June, 2 - 3 pm at the square near the Diergaardesingel, behind the Kruisplein (near Central Station)

Since early 1999 the CELL offices are located at the Diergaardesingel, which lies directly at the little square behind the Kruisplein in the center of Rotterdam. It is a very lively location, plagued however by the presence of junkies, dealers, and youngsters 'hanging out'. All the same, people of many different nationalities have been living here in harmony for many years already. At the moment CELL, in collaboration with various municipal services and the Projectbureau BK-Centrum (CBK), is working to completely redesign this location as part of the event 'Rotterdam multi-cultural harbor city' while emphasizing the social interaction between the people living here.

Japanese artist Maki Ueda, who lives and works in Rotterdam, has been commissioned by CELL to develop the webcam installation Hole in the Earth specifically for this square: a virtual hole, making it possible - so to speak - to look directly at a spot on the other side of the Earth and to communicate with people on that side. This work aims at being nothing more or less than the fulfillment of the immediate response we all remember having at the moment we learned that the Earth is round: 'What would it be like to look through a hole in the Earth and talk to the people on the other side?' This is a means of communication that derives its meaning as art from the people using it: will they experience it physically as 'a hole', while knowing it is only a virtual hole? Will time delay and the inevitable disruption of the images further undermine this illusion or will these 'interferences' serve to enhance the feeling that the other side of the earth is very far away indeed? By taking the webcam phenomenon - in spite of all discussions about dissolving the disparity between private and public - out of the intimacy of the living room and placing it in the public space, Ueda hopes to give a new, or rather renewed meaning to the square.

Preview 'Gat in de aarde' van Maki Ueda zaterdag 9 juni, 14.00 - 15.00 uur plein aan de Diergaardesingel, achter het Kruisplein (nabij Centraal Station)

Sinds begin 1999 is het kantoor van CELL gevestigd aan de Diergaardesingel, direct gelegen aan het pleintje achter het Kruisplein in Rotterdam-centrum. Het is een zeer levendige, maar absoluut problematische plek met veel overlast van junkies, dealers en 'hangjongeren'. Toch is het ook een plek waar mensen van veel verschillende nationaliteiten al sinds jaar en dag in volledige harmonie met elkaar samenleven. CELL werkt op dit moment, in samenwerking met de diverse betrokken gemeentelijk diensten en Projectbureau BK-Centrum (CBK), aan de duurzame herinrichting van deze locatie, die geheel in het teken zal staan van Rotterdam als multiculturele havenstad, waarbij nadrukkelijk een functie moet worden vervuld in het sociale verkeer van de buurtbewoners.

De in Rotterdam wonende en werkende Japanse kunstenares Maki Ueda, ontwikkelt op uitnodiging van CELL de webcaminstallatie 'Gat in de aarde' voor dit plein: een virtueel gat dat het als het ware mogelijk maakt om rechtstreeks naar een plek aan de andere kant van de aarde te kijken en met de mensen aan die kant te communiceren. Het werk wil niet meer en niet minder zijn dan de verwezenlijking van een directe reactie die een ieder van ons kent vanaf het moment dat er een besef is dat de aarde rond is: "Hoe zou het zijn om door een gat in de aarde te kijken en te praten met mensen aan de andere kant?" Een communicatiemiddel dat haar betekenis als kunstwerk krijgt door de gebruikers: zullen zij het fysiek voelen als 'een gat', wetende dat het hier slechts om een virtueel gat gaat, zal de time-delay en de onherroepelijke verstoring van beelden deze illusie verder ontnemen of zullen deze 'verstoringen' juist bijdragen aan het gevoel dat de andere kant van de aarde toch wel heel erg ver weg is? Juist door het verschijnsel webcam uit - alle discussies over het opheffen van de tegenstelling tussen prive en publiek ten spijt - de intimiteit van een huiskamer te halen en het in deze traditionele openbare ruimte te plaatsen, hoopt Ueda het plein een nieuwe of liever hernieuwde betekenis te geven.
